Had my first visit on the bela at milnthorpe this sunday after parking in the beef sheds and walking the river i could see there was a lot of water still in the river, passing by a nice looking piece of water i saw a fish top.
on getting into the water and pitching a fly up stream the first glide back nothing happened a few casts later on the way back the fly dissapeared and a angry bela trout was hooked after a brief but heart stopping battle a plump 1 lb trout was nestling in my net.
After returning the fish and moving up the pool i had another trout of similar size my first visit on the bela and i had 2 fish a perfect day spent on a new water, i carried on walking the bank and pitching a fly in likely looking places but caught nothing more.
I still have one more guest ticket and 4 days to the end of the season so i hope i will get a chance to get back on the bela.
A light hearted look into the year of a fly fishing fanatic, I don’t profess to be the best fly fisherman in the world, I tie my own flies (badly) and travel the country fishing various locations. I am at home fishing anything from the Lakeland tarns where I live to the rivers of the Eden to fishing Stillwater’s.

high newton
With the rain finally stopping and a few hours on my hands I decided on a trip up to High Newton,on pulling into the car park the weather didnt look brilliant as a thick carpet of mist was hanging over the water.
Taking a quick look over the wall i could see plenty of fish topping so if want all bad,Greg and rastas decided to fish off the dam wall i headed for fantasy island.
I opted for a small un weighted damsel nymph and was soon into the resident rainbows catching the majority of fish just under the surface i had a real hectic session,on the way back to the car i went and had a word greg and his brother who told me they has been catching on various sized sedges.
Off home to hopefully watch the rhinos beat hull and end a perfect day.

high newton
With a break from wind and rain i had a mornings fishing up at high newton on the WAADA water. The sun was out and with a gentle ripple the prospects looked good.
On setting up i could see lots of fish topping but now the hard part what are they feeding on?, I struggled for a good hour but switching between f flys and sedges (size 18) i managed to take fish on a regular basis.

Quiet Times
Over the last few weeks with the weather being on the hot side i has been a case of picking your days and fishing either early morning or late at night, With this in mind I have been doing a few late sessions on my local brown trout water knotthallow.
Using my float tube I have had some very fruitful sessions catching well on mainly spider patterns, but on my last visit there was a massive hatch of flying ants hatching off and this certainly had the trout looking up.
I have also not neglected the river and have had a few sessions on the eden catching mainly trout with a sprinkling of big grayling amongst them, last weekend i took a fellow angler onto the eden who had not fished a river before. After setting his tackle up and showing him likely haunts he hooked and lost a trout and then managed to hook and land a grayling the look on his face was amazing and worth the trip up just for that.
Last sunday saw me on the bela at milnethorpe (regretably not fishing but on a working party) greg and myself have been the last twice and for half a days work you get a days ticket to fish the water,so i will be on the bela next weekend weather permitting.
Ulverston anglers are holding a open day on knott see link to the uaa website its a free days fishing with local angler and casting guru tony reily there to answer all your casting questions and give free lessons its all free so come along

knott
After blanking on the eden sat and working on a weeding party on the bela sunday morning i headed for knotthallow sunday afternoon for a session in my float tube.
The weather was just about ideal with a gentle ripple overcast and warm sport was frantic i switched between a damsel nymph and various spider patterns to bring a steady stream of trout to my tube

sunday session
Up to knott sunday for a few hours in the float tube there was a window in the weather before the heavens opened.
On setting up and getting on the water i could see a few fish topping but nothing much rising a opted for a team of spiders and headed for the middle of the tarn,I caught 6 fish but had to search them out and caught almost all of them casting right into the edge of the bankside as they seemed to be hugging the waters edge.

Eden treble
With the weather set fair sat a had a day on the Eden and as usual it did not disappoint, the river is at summer level low and clear and you could see lots of fish moving about but with the low clear water stealth is needed as they spook very easily.
First graying was a fish of about 7 inch's and was very welcome indeed at least i never blanked !!! the second and third were fish of 2lb and 2 1/4 lb they put a terrific scrap.
As usual they were photographed and returned unharmed to fight another day.

After walking around and lookng for moving fish i caught 2 cracking sized fish both on beetles on filling in the catch return book i could see that in a 2 hour session dave had caught 7 trout on a F Fly and Adam was still fishing and catching on a regular basis.

Eden
Sunday i had a trip up the eden the weather was cold, wet and windy i had a walk down the bank looking for any rising fish but there was little or no surface activity
Greg noticed that there was quite a few olives hatching off so hope sprang eternal, greg was first to catch a small trout about 7 inch.
In the next pool i hooked into a trout that led me a merry dance several times leaping out of the water trying to throw the hook eventually i got it to the net and released it a fish close to 1lb.
We carried on up the river looking for fish to cast at but saw nothing so wet and cold we walked back to the car, not the best day but as always it was nice to get on the river.

out and about
With the weather finally calming down a bit i headed for knotthallow armed with my new rod i treated myself to a orvis helios a nice bit of kit and i got it for a steal. After a quick casting lesson with Tony Riley i decided to have a hour on knott and try and christen my rod the weather was not brilliant with a cold northerly wind but i did manage to winkle 3 trout out.
On bank holiday monday i drove up to the eden for a few hours river fishing again not brilliant weather with a cold wind but about 2 oclock the sun tried to break out i had 3 trout one weighed just over 1 1/2 ib and the other 2 were nudging 1 ib a great way to spend a bank holiday.

ALL Shapes And Sizes
On setting up i noticed a steady string of beetles getting blown onto the water there was the occasional fish rising but the more the beetles got blown onto the water the more the fish started to feed.
I had a great day catching several fish all shapes and sizes with a nice surprise to end the day.

sunday
Today i had a half day session on high newton the weather was fine with a good ripple on the water, on getting to the water and having a quick look around i could not see anything showing.
I opted for a intermediate line and a nymph and caught fish the trick was swapping colours after a couple of fish.
